Back in the classroom

🇺🇸 Written in English

Bamse was back in a classroom. Not as a teacher, not as a visitor, but as a student. On his desk lay a notebook, a pen, and a dictionary as thick as a paving stone. He had made up his mind: he was going to learn a new language. German, to be precise. “Hallo,” he muttered. It sounded as if he was trying to suppress a cough.

Next to him sat an older gentleman wearing a hat. “I’m learning it for my grandchildren,” he said. “They live in Berlin.” On the other side sat a young woman who wanted to learn German for her job in Austria. Bamse smiled. Everyone had their own reason.

The teacher, an energetic woman with a big smile, wrote on the board: Wie heißt du? Bamse copied it neatly, underlined it three times, and whispered, “That must mean something important.”

The lesson continued with sounds, sentences, and lots of laughter. Someone accidentally said he was a sausage. Another called his house a train. Bamse slowly felt less insecure. Making mistakes was part of it.

During the break, he drank coffee with his classmates. They practiced together, laughed at each other’s pronunciation, and shared tips. Bamse realized that he was not only learning a language, but also meeting new people — each with their own story.

At the end of the day, he wrote in his notebook: Heute habe ich etwas Neues gelernt (Today I learned something new).

And that was true. Not only German, but also that it’s never too late to start over. Even if you’re a bear with a backpack full of doubts.
