It’s Saturday morning and Bamse is riding his bike with a basket on the handlebars. He’s on his way to the market. The air smells of freshly baked bread from the “Goede morgen” bakery and also a little bit of last night’s rain. The street is still sleepy and slowly starting to wake up.
On the way, he passes a man walking his dog. The dog is wearing a fluorescent raincoat and a light on its collar. Bamse nods politely and the man waves back. A little further on, Bamse sees a child on a balance bike shouting, “Look, Mom, a bear!” Bamse waves, although he’s not sure if it was him they were talking about.
The market is a cacophony of voices, smells, and colors. The greengrocer shouts, “Three zucchini for a euro!” Bamse buys two, because three zucchini are too many for one pan.
He chats briefly with the flower seller, who gives him a sprig of mint as a gift. “For your tea,” she says. Bamse puts it in his coat pocket as if it were a treasure.
On the way back, he cycles more slowly. The mint smells sweet, the zucchini wobble in the basket. Life is good, he thinks. Bamse fantasizes about his mint tea and cup of zucchini soup as soon as he gets home.
